While I Was of No Use #LoveIsTheAnswer

Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented Himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put His love on the line for us by offering His Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to Him.
Romans 5:6-8 MSG

Now that is love.

Be blessed,

To Everything There is a Season #RememberingWynter

On this day, six years ago, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I learned the meaning of these words. I learned that sometimes a time to be born and a time to die will occur at the same time. If you haven’t already read my story, I’ll just briefly share that I endured a healthy full term pregnancy that resulted in stillbirth.

I learned even more that, as confused, angry, hurt, lost, heartbroken as I was, God heals and restores. I learned that God is in control, of all things at all times.
I learned to surrender and trust Him, through the hurt and the pain.

Yes, six years later I still experience those feelings from time to time. A mother will never get over the loss of her child, she simply learns to live with it. Hope allows me to cope.
“God promises to one day remove all your sorrows and replace them with everlasting joy.”

As I kept busy at the salon this morning and enjoyed a nice evening afterwards with the family, we stopped as a family for a moment to remember. Every moment I breathe, I live remembering Wynter. Sleep well, my angel. You are loved. Until that day…

In Quiet Trust I Find Strength

I’ve been using the First 5 app for a few weeks and I’m really enjoying the time spent in God’s Word. Today’s devotional continued the story of Jacob and Esau. I am constantly amazed by God’s power and reminded to trust Him as the source of my strength and the strength of my life.

Below is a brief excerpt from today’s reading that I felt was worth sharing as an affirmation for every day.

  • My God is mighty! He can protect me from harm.
  • My God is mighty! He can forgive me and change me.
  • My God is mighty! He can wrestle down my pride.
  • My God is mighty! He can turn murderous threats into a loving embrace.
  • My God is mighty! He can bring healing and reconciliation to my relationships.
  • My God is mighty! His plans and purposes will prevail.
  • My God is mighty! He has the power and grace to handle every situation I face.

You fill in the blank. My God is mighty! He can __________________________.

“To him who by means of his power working in us is able to do so much more than we can ever ask for, or even think of: to God be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time, for ever and ever! Amen.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:20-21‬ ‭GNB‬‬

I Am Fearless

Fear. We’ve all been faced with and overcome by fear at some point in our lives. Fear is merely…

  • False
  • Evidence
  • Appearing
  • Real

Will you

  • Forget
  • Everything
  • And
  • Run

  • Face
  • Everything
  • And
  • Rise

God does not give a spirit of fear.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” ‭‭II Timothy‬ ‭1:7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

When the spirit of fear is within you, it is from the enemy and it’s the enemy’s way of controlling you.

You have to change your mindset. Believe that you can and will survive whatever you’re facing, and you will walk in your authority.

The next time you’re faced with fear, stop for a moment and verbally affirm yourself by saying “I Am Fearless”.

Have I Told You About My Baby Brother?

This day is one of the most important in my life. On this day, 28 years ago, I became a big sister. I remember the anticipation and excitement of my baby brother’s arrival. Little did I know, God would use Him in a mighty way.
At the tender age of 2, he was diagnosed with cancer. His ever-so-energetic and active little body turned fragile and weak. I remember there were times he appeared nearly lifeless because the chemotherapy seemed to take everything from him.
My baby brother was on his deathbed. So soon!

Our family didn’t practice any form of religion or faith until that point. Although I remember visiting church with my Abuela (grandmother) and thanking God at mealtime: “God is great, God is good, thank You for this food”, I didn’t know much about God or was even sure if He was real. While the chemotherapy took a toll on him and the doctors were unsure of the outcome, God knew that His plans were to give our family hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

To make a long story short, God had the final say. My baby brother survived his battle with cancer and our family accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. He is our miracle. Where doctors said the chemotherapy would stunt his growth, God blessed him with height taller than all four of us children at 5′ 11″. Where doctors said he would have learning disabilities he graduated as an honor student and served in student council of his high school class. Where doctors said he would be unable to reproduce, God blessed him with a beautiful wife and a son that’s almost 2 years old and just as energetic as he was as a little boy. His talents and passion for music and art are amazing and He allows God to use him as a vessel to share the good news.

My baby brother was the means by which our family would come to know God and His gift of salvation. I remember when he would walk up to strangers, show his scar that goes across his stomach from one side to the other and proudly say “Jesus saved me”. While I was afraid at the thought of losing my baby brother and wondering how we would live without him, God was more concerned with our eternity, losing us and living without Him.

Just as His Word says: “The Lord is not slow in doing what he promised—the way some people understand slowness. But God is being patient with you. He does not want anyone to be lost, but he wants all people to change their hearts and lives.”

‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:9‬ ‭NCV‬‬
It has been a joy watching my baby brother grow into a handsome young man with a family of his own. Yes, I do realize he’s grown with a family of his own. But he’ll always be my baby brother. 😉

His life has truly changed mine, for that I’m blessed and forever grateful. Being a proud big sister I’m also one of his biggest fans. Please be sure to visit his website/photography blog: Jose W. Photo. Wish him a happy birthday while you’re at it! 😉

God bless!

Flashback Friday

When I started my health and wellness business I wanted to make extra money💵 to pay off debt💳. With nothing but student loans 📚looming over me it was preventing me from having a life of freedom with my family👨‍👩‍👧‍👦.

If you’ve been allowing your fears to hold you back from living the life you want and deserve, you will forever be stuck in the cycle 🌀 of working hard for someone else’s dreams, and being broke. Not just broke financially but mentally, emotionally and spiritually.🙍

The best investment you can make is in yourself.🙆 If you don’t try, you’ll never know.

My business isn’t about wraps. It’s about changing lives.🎭

Are you ready to live the life you’ve always imagined? 🙇🏻💭

I Am Supposed To Be Here

I opened my YouVersion Bible app this morning, as I normally do to read our devotional before we go our separate ways. I saw the verse of the day and of course, like so many others, it’s one of my favorites. “You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because you are to be feared; all you do is strange and wonderful. I know it with all my heart.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139:13-14‬ ‭GNB‬‬ (If you were unsure, GNB means Good News Bible.)

Well, this verse rings a bell with me because of my story. The way I tell it: I wasn’t supposed to be here, but God…

You see, my mother didn’t expect to have another child at the time that she learned she was pregnant with me, her third. She had an IUD (intrauterine device) which was in place to prevent pregnancy. So while she was gaining a little weight and my father was encouraging her to workout with military exercise, she didn’t think it was due to pregnancy.

When my mother finally had a checkup, and the doctor shared news, he added something more that she didn’t expect. Because of how the device was implanted, the doctor mentioned that it would be dangerous for my mother to carry through with the pregnancy. She would be high risk and could possibly lose the child, or her own life. He said she would have to terminate the pregnancy. So the excitement of a new life was shattered before it even sank in. What was she to do? She didn’t believe in abortion. But she had two children who needed their mother. Would it be worth the risk? Maybe she and my father would be able to plan a child later on in life without the risk? A decision had to be made.

Reluctantly my mother went to her follow through appointment. It was a different Doctor that saw her this time. He checked vitals, belly, etc. Then he asked if she was sure this is what she wanted to do. She looked up at him, confused. “What do you mean am I sure I want to do this? I don’t really have a choice. If I continue with this pregnancy I either lose my child or leave my children without a mother, or both.”

The doctor was just as stunned as she was and even infuriated. “What doctor told you this?! Better yet, don’t even tell me because I’d have his license revoked so quick… You and your child will be just fine. Enjoy your pregnancy and take care of yourself.”

I guess this is the point when the excitement of a new life could sink in. She shared the news with family immediately. Throughout the pregnancy my mother was thinking of names. She already had a unique taste in identity with my sister, Betsy, and my brother, Benny. No they’re not nicknames or shortened versions of Elizabeth and Benjamin. It’s a Philly pride thing I guess…Betsy (Ross) Ben (Franklin). Get it? 😉

Anyway, her third child hadn’t arrived yet but already had a story to tell. Maybe Josephine after my dad (Jose)? Or Faith because of the faith in God that everyone and everything would be alright? Or Joy because she was so joyful she could carry through with her pregnancy?

My mother chose “Grace”. Unmerited divine favor. Unmerited means undeserving. Divine means from God. Favor means gift. You see, even though she was excited and happy, most of all she felt humbled. Why did God bless her with another child? Why was she deserving of that chance to walk away from the doctor’s office with no harm done to her baby or herself?

I, on the other hand, marveled at my name growing up. “Mami why couldn’t I have a Spanish name, like Carmen or Maria.” “My name doesn’t show I’m Puerto Rican.” “No one else has my name.” “My name is an old lady name.” Mind you, I was born in the 80s. I had every question and objection as to why I should have been named differently.

But God had a way of opening my eyes. I graduated high school in June 2000. I received a daily devotional for graduates and the verse right inside the cover read: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11‬ ‭NIV‬‬ There I was, 17 years old, and it made sense that God had His plans for me since I was in my mother’s womb.

I’ll go on another time to tell more, and if you’ve read some of my past posts you see that I share how my life is full of grace. I mean that is the title of my blog after all.  I just think it’s amazing how God reminds us of who He is and who we are in Him.

For the past few months my fellow entrepreneurs have been joining in on morning motivation calls and this morning’s theme was about being enough. Our affirmations were:

  • I am enough.
  • I was built for this.
  • I am equipped for where I am and where I am going.
  • I am supposed to be here.

I know all this to be true because God tells me so. 🙂 He formed me in my mother’s womb. I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

No matter what you’re going through in life, remind yourself today, you are supposed to be here.

God bless!

Question Authority

I started getting the Sunday paper about a month ago. My main reason was to have my children, especially my sixth grader, do current events reports like I remember doing in sixth grade. Reviewing his schoolwork and homework I felt like the education system has eliminated a lot of useful areas for children. It confuses me but instead of bashing the system I proudly embrace my role in being my children’s first teacher. I have homeschooled for about two years before but more on that some other time.

My second reason for buying the Sunday paper is to cut coupons. I remember happily clipping away with my scissors as a youngster while Mom told me which coupons she wanted. I followed suit and my daughter proudly organized them by type. I plan on getting into Couponing to cut back on expenses. I’m not sure yet how extreme I’ll take it but any little bit helps until I get better at it.

One bonus to the Sunday paper that I forgot about is the comics! I loved reading through the comics as a kid and I learned to draw with comics, among other things. I still get a good kick out of the simple humor found in the comics section. And if there’s one thing that’s needed after reading through a mix of local, national, international, business, political news is a good laugh, no matter how brief.

So while skimming through I saw this comic which perfectly depicts my thoughts as a mother at times:

question authority

No I’m not raising my children to be defiant of authority. I emphasize respect at all times. What I don’t want them to do is settle for less than their potential because some “authority” says they can’t. I want them to question the restrictions placed on their dreams by statistics. I want them to reach for The Authority that has a plan for them, now and in the future. (Jeremiah 29:11) And if there is a question I want them to ask of Him is “Lord, what will You have me do?”

Just the other day, my 11 year old frustratingly asked “why was I even born?” Part of it was due to me saying “No” to a request of his. {He doesn’t like that word very much.} As the oldest child, he likes things his way or…his way. That may be why we butt heads often…the apple doesn’t fall far! 😉 But hearing his questioning and realizing it could be deeper than a come-back response to My authority, I had a talk with him.

I explained that it’s okay to not know what our purpose is until we’ve experienced life. I’m a grown up {most times…more of a Big Kid at heart} and even though I’m a wife, mom and cosmetologist I still question what my purpose is. He agreed that spending time reading God’s Word and praying would help him get to know God better while learning God’s purpose for him.

While I may have a temporary authority over them now, God has entrusted me with their care to point them in His direction, The Authority of all. The most amazing thing is that God does not abuse his authority, as we humans so easily do. Instead He lets us make the choice whether we will follow His guidance or not. What a blessing it is to ask of Him and receive. (Matthew 7:7, John 15:7, James 4:3)

So while sometimes I have to lay down the law and not give in to the questioning of My authority, I go to The One who has the ultimate authority knowing that I can ask anything of Him and He will lovingly answer. (James 1:5)

Do you feel questioning authority is acceptable? Necessary at times? Have you ever questioned authority? What was the outcome?

2014 Goals

This is the last week of January so I’ve had plenty of time to think of what my personal resolutions goals are for 2014. I had to give enough time for the “new year, new you” phase to die down. Every new year marks the proclaimed new resolutions. I, however, like to set new goals. Sometimes big, others small, but always practical. As the past few years have provided opportunities for exploring new ventures, I am learning to make changes of my own in an effort to advance my growth, both personally and professionally.

This year, as with every other, I decided that I would to continue focusing on things that matter to me: faith, relationships, fitness, finances & fun.
I start my mornings with a daily devotional right on my iPhone or iPad with the YouVersion Bible app. My two current {& favorite} plans are “Joyce Meyer: Promises for Your Everyday Life” and “Parenting by Design”. I find both to be great in keeping me anchored in God’s word, to get me through the challenges of daily life as a woman, wife and mother.

With my husband’s current health situation (which is still undiagnosed) I am thankful to have the flexibility to be by his side through his many medical office visits. Aside from just being there for him, I want to strengthen our relationship by making time for regular date nights. Just because we are married and spend every waking moment together lately, doesn’t mean we can’t take time to plan and enjoy a date night. So I am going to commit to a date one night a month for starters. I’ll definitely be checking The Dating Divas for ideas.

I’ve always been involved with my children’s education and school activities as well as their own personal interests. With the Rainbow Loom craze being all the rage lately, we’ve been spending a lot of crafty time together. My husband and I showed them our childhood craze: plastic craft lace lanyards, also known as gimp or scoubidou, boondoggles, etc. They’ve really enjoyed being creative and I’ve enjoyed the quality time together. I plan on continuing to nurture their interests and I hope they enjoy these memories as much as I do.

As far as fitness goes, I started a regimen with my Wii using My Fitness Coach in December of 2012. I really liked the progress I was making as well as how personally tailored the program is to my needs. I noticed how my overall health and energy improved. Because things have changed a bit over the past few months, I have started using the 7-Minute Workout (High Intensity Training) app. Yup, right on my iPhone. So there’s no excuse to not get my workout in regardless of where I am. In 10 minutes max I’m warmed up, worked out, and cooled down. I was skeptical at first thinking the amount of time was too short or the exercises implemented weren’t working out all my muscles but trust me when I say, the next day I feel the burn. I do everything from planks, crunches, jogging in place, chair dips and more. I look forward to each new day’s routine so I can give my body an overall intense training.

I would like to get started on becoming debt free. Student loans continue to loom and I just want to have financial freedom. Some may think that’s a far fetched dream but I know it’s possible with commitment and financial management. I’ve begun to establish multiple streams of income through online marketing. Some methods include affiliate marketing, referral marketing and direct sales. I also complete surveys and receive compensation for my time. If you’re interested in earning extra cash, feel free to give it a try yourself! There is no obligation, you’ve got nothing to lose, and money to gain.

Enjoying the life I have is definitely an important part of my daily happiness. Tomorrow is never promised and I do my best to live one day at a time, enjoying the moments I’m blessed with. I look forward to fun every day with simple things such as a good reason to laugh, a quick game of Uno and just about anything that can be made fun. There will be weekends, birthdays and many activities throughout the year to have fun and I’m looking forward to it all.

I feel the photo below sums it all up quite well:
